Scholarship Recipients

 

Jonathon Kienzle Firestone High School GPA 4.432

 

Jonathon was a member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of the “Harvard Book Award”, an AP Scholar with Honors and co-champion in the school National Vocabulary Championship Contest.

 

He was a 4-year member of the swim team; earning team Most-Improved Swimmer Award and was named Academic All-American. In addition, he was a 3-year starter on the baseball team earning team Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2007 and 2008, as well as, All-City of Akron Baseball Team and All City Scholar Team of Akron. Jonathon also was involved in many school and community volunteer activities, such as the Falcons Youth Baseball Camps, the Firestone Sectional Wrestling Tournament and the renovation of the Firestone High School baseball facility.

 

Jonathon plans to major in Chemical Engineering at Cornell University in the fall.

 

Robert Zupke Firestone High School GPA 4.421

 

Robert has been recognized for his excellence as a student as a member of the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars.In addition he has received several academic awards - “AP Scholar of Distinction”. “Brown Book Award”, Bausch & Lomb Science Award from the University of Rochester, and “National Merit Commended Scholar”.

Athletically, Robert was a 4 year member of the cross country team. He was an All City Selection in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and was an All Academic Team selection for four years.He also was a very successful baseball player being named to the All City Baseball Team and the All City Scholastic Team. Robert also was involved in the Falcons Youth Baseball Camps, the Firestone Sectional Wrestling Tournament and the renovation of the Firestone High School baseball facility.

 

Robert plans to attend Ohio State, majoring in engineering.

 

SHANNON PHILLIPS ST.VINCENT-ST.MARY GPA 4.268

 

Shannon has accumulated a very long list of academic awards and has been named to several academic organizations. This list includes: the Daimler Chrysler Youth Citizen Award, the Youth Optimist Award from the Greater Akron Optimist Club, the Science Fair Excellence Award at Districts, St. Michael’s Book Award for Scholarship and Service, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta and many more.

 

Shannon was a two-year letter winner in soccer, bowling and sports medicine. She developed a reputation as a person who cares more about the team’s goals than her own goals. She is the hardworking, dedicated athlete that every coach wishes he/she could have.

She is also extremely active in volunteer activities at the Village of St. Edwards, ATC (sports of handicapped children), school open houses, Church Evangelization Committee, Girl Scouts for multi-handicapped girls and the CYO.

 

Shannon plans to attend Walsh University in the fall.

 


MICHAEL GEDEON HUDSON HIGH SCHOOL GPA 4.4375

 

This Hudson High School student has received numerous school, district, state and national academic awards. Michael was the recipient of the Marian Albee Character Award, the Ray Hyser Award, the First Merit/Cleveland Cavaliers Scholar Award and the National Football Foundation School Award. In addition he has accumulated numerous school and league scholar awards. He is a member of the National Honor Society and founder/president of the Film Club.

 

Michael’s list of athletic awards is just as impressive. As a three year letter winner in football he has been named: Associated Press First Team All Ohio, Cleveland Touchdown Club/Portage County Offensive Player of the Year, Akron Touchdown Club Player of the Year. Michael was also a 2 year letter winner in basketball and was named All-Western Reserve Conference in 2007.

He is a member of the Key Club, Explorers Above Influence, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Youth to Youth. His volunteer activities include: Urban Vision, Open M Free Clinic, Peer Tutoring, Coats for Kids Drive and Catholic Life Team,

 

Michael turned down several Division I football scholarships, to attend Harvard University, which does not offer athletic scholarships.


VANESSA STAGLIANO NORDONIA HIGH SCHOOL GPA 4.8

 

Vanessa is ranked number 1 in her class of 334 students. She has been presented the Outstanding Student Award from the Akron Council of Engineering & Science Studies, the 2008 Chrysler Twinsburg Stamping Plant Summit County Citizen Youth Award, and the Principal Award for achieving higher than a 3.75 GPA each grading period of her high school career. She is an AP Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of 14 academic awards for the highest grade in individual classes.

 

A three year letter winner in soccer, Vanessa has been named All Western Reserve Conference First Team, Honorable Mention All Greater Cleveland Coaches Award, Northeast Scholar Athlete Award, All Conference for Northeast Ohio Conference Lake Division and team MVP for 2006 and 2007.

 

Vanessa is president of the Nordonia Tea Society, which plans and organizes artistic, cultural and social events. She attended Buckeye Girls State in 2007 and volunteers her time as a Zoo Crew Member, Assistant Instructor at the Shepard Rd. Christian Church Vocation Bible School, Autism Peer Mentors and National Honor Society Community Service.

 

Vanessa will attend John Carroll University majoring in biology with a minor in neuroscience in the pre-medicine program.
